“My favorite slang word is ‘padre,’ which refers to something good, surprising and wonderful. It is a term I use with my friends when good things happen in their lives. For example: ‘What padre that you were admitted to the university!’”

“My favourite slang word is ‘lan,’ which is a Turkish slang word which means ‘you’ when you are referring to a friend. I like it because I can use it in every situation with friends. For example, you could say, ‘Lan, gel buraya. Çok güzel haberim var.,’ which means, ‘My friend, come here. I have great news.”

— Isabel, 12, Turkey

"My favourite slang word is 'tea.' If someone were to say, ‘What's the tea?’ it would mean, 'What's the latest gossip?'"

— Michelle, 15, Canada

“My favourite slang word is the Argentinian expression 'che.' We use it here whenever we want to call someone without necessarily using his or her name. It can only be used among friends and sometimes very close family. For example you can say ‘Che, ¿tomamos unos mates?’ which means, 'Hey, shall we have some mates?' Mates is a traditional Argentinian drink.”

— María Belén, 19, Argentina
